Chosen Locations

Weta Cave

Weta Cave is the creative hub behind some of Hollywood's biggest visual effects projects, such as the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit franchises, King Kong and Avatar.

Located in the heart of Miramar, Weta Cave is one of the Capital's tourist hot spots and a must-see destination for any film enthusiast.

The  Cave is just 20 minutes drive from central Wellington with dedicated bus routes and drop off points for visitors. For those not using the bus routes, there is plenty of free street parking available close to the Cave.

The Embassy Theatre

Originally built in 1926, the Embassy Theatre is well known for its hosting of the Australasian premieres of the first two Lord of the Rings films, and the world premieres of both the final Lord of the Rings film and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Located in Wellington's CBD, the Embassy Theatre is a popular destination with movie-goers and the perfect theatre destination for my design project as it also has close ties to Weta Workshop through the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit franchises.

The Film Archive

Wellington's Film Archive is home to over 150,00 of New Zealand's film and media titles. Established in 1981, the Film Archive is a charitable trust that is responsible for the housing and preservation of donated media from the earliest days of cinema to contemporary film. The collection consists of feature films, documentaries, short films, home movies, newsreels, TV programmes and advertisements.

Inside the building is a cafe/bar area with plenty of seating for visitors. Down from there is a small screening area with a large television that displays some of the content shown at the Film Archive. Next door is a gallery that has multiple screens that show off different exhibitions that are being held there at the time.
